As an artist, Dix Baines finds it essential to paint on location, or plein air, as often as possible. As the camera never accurately records the colors of a scene, painting plein air allows for the scene to be recorded as closely as possible. The added bonus of painting plein air, is smelling the smells, hearing the sounds, and being immersed in the life of the area being painting. Once back in the Studio, fresh painting in hand, along with photos, Dix is able to draw upon the memory of being in the place and put all those thoughts and feelings, along with the paint, onto the canvas. “Dark Shadows and Goldenrod” was painted on location. One individual commented that it “Looked like Texas hill country.” Anyone want to venture a guess as to where this little gem was actually painted?
