The Greeley Western Invitational Art Show is held each year in conjunction with the Greeley Stampede in Greeley, Colorado. In keeping with the western theme of the Stamped, this year Dix Baines focused on several barns he found here in Colorado. Barns are interesting structures, as they speak of times past and yet at the same time are timeless.  The architecture in these particular barns are simple and yet the simplicity adds to their beauty as they are incorporated into the surrounding landscape. These gems are the subjects of several of his paintings that will be on display and for purchase at the Gala on June 23rd . For those interested in attending, call 970-356-7787 or visit http://greeleystampede.org/ . Shirley Holland, the Art Director for the Greeley Western Invitational Art Show has done a remarkable job this year by adding a website which focuses entirely on the art show.  The website is kept current and can be visited by going to http://stampedewesternartistselection.shutterfly.com. ENJOY!

TODAY MARKS 14 YEARS SINCE I WALKED AWAY FROM A CAREER IN INTERIOR DESIGN AND ARCHITECTURE AND INTO A CAREER AS A FULL-TIME ARTIST. IN 2001, “SOUTHWEST ART MAGAZINE” REFERRED TO IT AS A “LEAP OF FAITH”.  REFLECTING BACK OVER THE PAST 14 YEARS, THAT IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT.  EVERYDAY IS A NEW LEAP OF FAITH, AS I WORK TO CONVEY TO MY AUDIENCE AND ONTO THE CANVAS WHAT TOUCHES ME AND WHAT I AM PASSIONATE ABOUT. PAINTING IS ABOUT DEVELOPING A SKILL, BUT IT IS ALSO ABOUT PUTTING A BIT OF THE ARTIST SOUL ONTO THE CANVAS AND HOPING THAT SOMEONE CONNECTS WITH IT.  NOT TOO LONG AFTER WALKING AWAY FROM MY DAY JOB, I BEGAN SHOWING THE MCLARRY FINE ART GALLERY.  RECENTLY, THESE FOUR PAINTINGS SOLD AT THE GALLERY.  A NICE WAY TO COMMEMORATE THE 14 YEAR ANNIVERSARY.

OFF THE EASEL
A few years ago, Dix was sharing with me the philosophy of an American painter of the 1800’s by the name of George Inness (http://www.georgeinness.org ).  Besides being an extraordinary artist, the thoughts behind his paintings were just as astounding.  One little tidbit that I learned that day, which actually was a bit amusing, was that Innes never felt that a painting was “done”.  This could be a problem should a client bring a painting back to the studio, as they may pickup a completely different painting days later, as Inness revisited the painting.  I have found that this habit is not unique to Inness. As someone on the sidelines, I have had the opportunity to watch Dix as he has grown through a painting and then gone back and applied what he has learned to a past painting. Typically, it is not a huge change as apparently Inness was fond of doing.  More times than not, it has been a simple stroke of color or a lightening of an area that has caused the darks to pop, but in the end the subtle additions have been what was needed to take a painting from good to great.

"Fish Rising" 24x27 $5200

"BOULDER VIEW" 10x20 SOLD

For those that live in Colorado, these are the kind of sunsets we have the opportunity to see everyday.  Some days they are orange, such as in “Boulder View” and other days pink and other days yellow.  Over the years, during the hours of sunsets, the Baines’ family can often be found in the middle of our street enjoying the beauty of the sunsets.  Take a minute today and marvel at the beauty that surrounds us.  Kathlyn Gogarty-Baines

"BIG SKY" 5x7 SOLD

"RAINBOW" 8x10 $1200

"WHITE CHURCH OF PILAR" 5x7 SOLD

When Dix Baines stepped away from a full-time job as a Project Designer in a design firm, to pursue a career as an artist, he told me one day that he never wanted to paint, as he put it, “girls in pink dresses”. In other words, he wanted to paint from life; everywhere and everything.  He had and still has no interest in revisiting the same subject over and over, rather wanting to try his hand at painting the world before him.  This goal has taken him to many locations where he has visited images from the Southwest Churches, to the vistas of the land to, the fish in mountain streams.  No matter what the subject, he strives to express the images through paint with accuracy and honesty. -Kathlyn Gogarty-Baines

NEWS FROM DIX BAINES STUDIO

As has been said in previous emails, Dix always says that as people collect his paintings, we collect them. We both have found that over the years of Dix’s art career, the best part of the job is the people we meet and interact with.  It is always a pleasure as the year comes to an end, that we are able to open our home and the studio and invite all of those that we have “collected” to join us for a celebration of art and the friendships that have come through that same art. We ask each of you to join us for our Annual Holiday Open House and Auction on Friday, December 10th
