“St. George Light” 8×10 oil $1200 available through Dix Baines Studio @ 720.353.2670
The role of an artist is to capture images of the day and bring them to the attention of members of society to appreciate and to leave a legacy for those who will follow. The artist captures the ordinary and shows us that it is extraordinary, whether it be a landscape, a building, or people on a street. They leave a visual history of our day so those that come later can connect with us.
Ground was broken for the LDS St. George Temple in November 1871 and the building was completed and dedicated in 1877. It is a monument to the pioneers who left the comforts of their homes in the East and spread and colonized the west, and as they did so erected monuments to their faith. OFF THE EASEL
The life of an artist always takes us down unexpected paths. A few weeks ago, Dix was approached about doing a painting of the Castle Rock, a predominant geological feature in Castle Rock, CO. The company who approached us wanted to use the image for dignitary gifts at a ground breaking for a Centura Health facility being built in Castle Rock. The result was this incrediable painting of the first light on the Castle Rock, which is now available through the studio, and a run of an edition of a 100 framed mini 5×7 giclees. Of the painting, Dix wrote:
“FIRST LIGHT ON CASTLE ROCK”
For years I had coached down in Castle Rock, and got to see the many moods of the landmark of the town. I had thought of painting the morning light often and capturing the light emblazened rock face. I was recently asked to paint the Castle Rock for a commerative gift print (closed series of 100). It was a challenge to pick a view, as the geological feature has extremely different profiles depending on your vantage point around the town. This view is the most familiar and sentimental to me; a view I often wanted to stop and paint.

When Dix Baines first began his full-time art career over 13 years ago, several of his paintings were purchased by the 5 star property The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Colorado. To date 9 of Dix’s paintings, as well as 30 giclees, are part of the permanent Broadmoor collection. This past week The Hayden Hays Gallery, located at The Broadmoor, invited Dix to further extend his artistic presence at the property by becoming one of their regular artists. As a project designer, during his Interior Design days, Dix worked on several projects at The Broadmoor, so for him this will be like coming home. We are excited about this new opportunity!

Like so many of us who are not artists, we often wonder why an artist selects a particular color within a painting; the orange in a tree or stream or the cobalt blue in the snow. These thoughts were mysteries to me, even though I have the opportunity to watch Dix Baines paint on a daily basis. Repeatedly, he has tried to point out the color he sees in the water, or snow or cloud, but it wasn’t until recently, as we sat by the pond one evening around sunset, that I caught a glimpse of what he sees. As the Colorado setting sun came streaming through the trees, I saw splashes of brilliant orange reflecting off the trunk of the tree. I immediately said, “I see it! I see the orange.” He knew exactly what I was talking about, because he was already seeing it. Now I am seeing the color everywhere and now I am understanding the palette he uses. As you go about your week, look beyond the color of the blue sky, to the pink reflections of the sunset on the clouds, the yellow sunflowers reflecting off the stream, or the orange bouncing off the trunks of the trees. Enjoy your week as you enjoy the beauty of our world!

OFF THE EASEL
During the year of 2007 – 2008, Dix Baines was commissioned to paint the incredible area of Gateway, Colorado. The area is 50 miles East of Arches National Park and 40 miles south of Grand Junction, Colorado. The area includes the Unaweep Canyon, as well as Palisades of red rock, and is a spectacular area. During the course of his time in the area, Dix kept a journal, which can be read in it’s entirety at http://www.dixbaines.com, along with previewing the paintings generated from the area. The attached painting is only one of nearly 50 paintings, 40 of which are owned by the property, that have been inspired by the grandeur of the area.
“Early mornings are the best way to start at Gateway. I drove in late last night, so I could not see anything. I was pleasantly surprised by the color in the trees. A fair amount of gold, and green hanging on. I like when a single tree has a mix – turning from green at the bottom, to gold at the top.” DIX BAINES – JOURNAL OCTOBER 14, 2007

MY BACKYARD
Some years ago I started digging a hole. If I had known then just all the digging I know now, my pond would have never come to be.
Creativity comes through experimentation and ignorance, the latter glosses over the reality of the effort and experience it truly takes in making something beautiful. My pond now is a sanctuary, a beautiful corner of life and beauty which also serves as an extension of my backyard studio. I have artists attend “studio nights” each Wednesday evening with the pond to paint by. Had I known how wonderful a water feature is, I would have done it 20 years ago! This year, it is maturing… there are midges, may flies and dragon flies for the frogs and tadpoles. The fish are growing (almost 3 times the size of the one image, really) and offering an abundance of new subject matter with the native flowers we have selected in our landscape.
It allows me to experiment with new material and to again put naivety back into the painting process. As Picasso defined artistic quality, he said it took him eighty years to learn to do what he did as a child.

“Adobe Snow”
9×12 oil $1300
People often ask Dix Baines how much he paints each day. His a response is that it’s a full time job, meaning he paints everyday. Even when sick, as he has been this past week with a case of strep and pink eye, deadlines still have to be met. “Adobe Snow” was completed while sick this week and with blurred vision, yet he still created an amazing masterpiece that was submitted to the C M Russell 2010 Miniature Invitational Art Show on Wednesday.

NEWS FROM DIX BAINES STUDIO
When Dix Baines first began down the path of pursuing his art passion as a career, he stated that he did not ever want to be an artist that was always painting “girl’s in pink dresses.” In other words, he made the decision to paint from life and not ever be stuck painting one image. To date he has kept his images as diverse as the life he paints; from angling, to landscape, to architecture. With his “Outdoor Studio” he now has the reference to explore, in paint, new images of Koi Fish, flowers, and birds. The attached painting is the first of his paintings of flowers. Should you be interested in previewing this painting, please contact the Studio at 720.353.2670. ENJOY!

Dix Baines’ often tells stories in his paintings. Whether it is a Father and Son on a river they have visited many times before, the Adobe Church created in faith by humble hands, or stories found within the landscape itself each scene celebrates the beauty and goodness within our world.
The painting “First Step” by Dix Baines shares an act of faith by Lucinda Haws Holdaway, who was a remarkable woman of strength and courage. Lucinda was the Mother of fourteen children; five of whom died at young ages. She struggled through illness, loss of children, loss of husband and financial woes, yet remained immovable in her faith.
Her life is something to celebrate on this Mother’s Day.
The painting depicts her baptism into her Church. Her Great-Great-Great Granddaughter posed for the painting. This is her story from her journal of the event:
“I Lucinda Haws Holdaway, was born October 20, 1828, near Fairfield, Wayne County, Illinois, the third daughter of Gilbert and Hannah Whitcomb Haws. In 1843, I was baptized, being then fifteen years of age. It was very cold weather; the ice on the stream was one and a half feet thick. I had to walk a block and a half to my home in my frozen clothes, but did not suffer any sickness from it.” Lucinda Haws Holdaway – journal
