SHALLOW WATERS oil 24x36 SOLD
Dix Baines began painting on a regular basis in 1994 and by 1997 he was painting full time. Over the years he has produced a lot of paintings. In those early years, we were still having paintings photographed and put on slides. Then digital photography started gaining steam. Now all these years later we have a mess of images both in digital and slide form. If the Studio burns down, we are in trouble as a record of all those years of work would be lost. The goal this year is to get all those images in digital format and uploaded into the “sky” of internet storage. In going through all these images, the stories that go along with the paintings are remembered. This particular painting, “Shallow Waters”, has such a memorable story behind it, that I snagged it for our permanent collection.
In 2001 we had the opportunity to take our children on a trip for two weeks to Hawaii. We spent a week in Kauai and enjoyed touring the island and exploring the beaches. While spending the day at Tunnel beach, on the northern part of the island, our youngest daughter met the dog in this painting. This beautiful golden retriever had tags, but didn’t appear to have an owner close at hand. The pup attached itself to our daughter and they became long lost friends. They played fetch all day and in fact, our daughter named the dog “Shallow”. When it came time to go home, she assumed that Shallow was going home with us. Shallow did not come home with us, but did make it into this painting. I suspect that when we are long gone, this painting will find it’s way into our daughter’s home, just as Shallow found his way into our daughter’s heart.

"THE SCRIPTURE OF NATURE" 18x22 $3600
“Painting is pondering. As I have practiced painting, I have had so much time to be with my thoughts, to breath in the scenery, to read and study other kindred spirits in the writings and paintings of artists I admire. Each was utterly connected to the views that they depicted. Each also depicted a quality of the life force, an artistic acknowledgement of God as the originator and central point of all life, and that everything in creation could be taken as evidence of the divine order of the universe. This scripture of nature, also profoundly influenced another painter, George Inness, who said that ‘the artist’s calling was to reflect the omnipresence of divine influx in nature.’ A definition of the term influx to which he was speaking is the continual in flowing of God’s divine love and wisdom-of life-from Him through the spiritual world, the world of causes, included that everything and every quality from the natural world first possesses a spiritual soul’.” –DIX BAINES
Dix Baines’ painting, The Scripture of Nature, has been selected as one of the paintings for the upcoming Off the Wall Auction, which will be held in conjunction with the 2012 Western Masters Art Show March 14-17th at the Best Western Heritage Inn located in Great Falls, Montana. OFF THE EASEL
A few years ago, Dix was sharing with me the philosophy of an American painter of the 1800’s by the name of George Inness (http://www.georgeinness.org ). Besides being an extraordinary artist, the thoughts behind his paintings were just as astounding. One little tidbit that I learned that day, which actually was a bit amusing, was that Innes never felt that a painting was “done”. This could be a problem should a client bring a painting back to the studio, as they may pickup a completely different painting days later, as Inness revisited the painting. I have found that this habit is not unique to Inness. As someone on the sidelines, I have had the opportunity to watch Dix as he has grown through a painting and then gone back and applied what he has learned to a past painting. Typically, it is not a huge change as apparently Inness was fond of doing. More times than not, it has been a simple stroke of color or a lightening of an area that has caused the darks to pop, but in the end the subtle additions have been what was needed to take a painting from good to great.

“St. George Light” 8×10 oil $1200 available through Dix Baines Studio @ 720.353.2670
The role of an artist is to capture images of the day and bring them to the attention of members of society to appreciate and to leave a legacy for those who will follow. The artist captures the ordinary and shows us that it is extraordinary, whether it be a landscape, a building, or people on a street. They leave a visual history of our day so those that come later can connect with us.
Ground was broken for the LDS St. George Temple in November 1871 and the building was completed and dedicated in 1877. It is a monument to the pioneers who left the comforts of their homes in the East and spread and colonized the west, and as they did so erected monuments to their faith. OFF THE EASEL
The life of an artist always takes us down unexpected paths. A few weeks ago, Dix was approached about doing a painting of the Castle Rock, a predominant geological feature in Castle Rock, CO. The company who approached us wanted to use the image for dignitary gifts at a ground breaking for a Centura Health facility being built in Castle Rock. The result was this incrediable painting of the first light on the Castle Rock, which is now available through the studio, and a run of an edition of a 100 framed mini 5×7 giclees. Of the painting, Dix wrote:
“FIRST LIGHT ON CASTLE ROCK”
For years I had coached down in Castle Rock, and got to see the many moods of the landmark of the town. I had thought of painting the morning light often and capturing the light emblazened rock face. I was recently asked to paint the Castle Rock for a commerative gift print (closed series of 100). It was a challenge to pick a view, as the geological feature has extremely different profiles depending on your vantage point around the town. This view is the most familiar and sentimental to me; a view I often wanted to stop and paint.
