"WHITE CHURCH OF PILAR" 5x7 SOLD

When Dix Baines stepped away from a full-time job as a Project Designer in a design firm, to pursue a career as an artist, he told me one day that he never wanted to paint, as he put it, “girls in pink dresses”. In other words, he wanted to paint from life; everywhere and everything.  He had and still has no interest in revisiting the same subject over and over, rather wanting to try his hand at painting the world before him.  This goal has taken him to many locations where he has visited images from the Southwest Churches, to the vistas of the land to, the fish in mountain streams.  No matter what the subject, he strives to express the images through paint with accuracy and honesty. -Kathlyn Gogarty-Baines

"ROCKY MOUNTAIN LIGHT" 10x10 SOLD

Rocky Mountain National Park is such an amazing place.  With the light of the sun setting in the Colorado sky, it is even more so.  This painting just sold at the Hayden Hays Gallery in Colorado Springs. They have only represented Dix’s work for a short time, but have done a great job and have had several paintings sell.  We look forward to working with them for years to come.

Thank you to all those for braving the snow and joining us for “Images of Faith-A Talk About by Dix Baines.  I was an amazing evening of learning about history and inspiration behind three of Dix’s Images of Faith.  We will be hosting a second “Images of Faith” on Saturday, March 5th at 7:00 PM at the Studio.  We invite all of those interested to join us.  Please contact the Studio at 720.353.2670 for additional information. – Kathlyn Gogarty-Baines

NEWS FROM DIX BAINES STUDIO

As has been said in previous emails, Dix always says that as people collect his paintings, we collect them. We both have found that over the years of Dix’s art career, the best part of the job is the people we meet and interact with.  It is always a pleasure as the year comes to an end, that we are able to open our home and the studio and invite all of those that we have “collected” to join us for a celebration of art and the friendships that have come through that same art. We ask each of you to join us for our Annual Holiday Open House and Auction on Friday, December 10th

OFF THE EASEL

Years ago Dix and I, with children in hand, visited the LA Museum of Art to see the Vincent Van Gogh exhibit. As we walked the galleries of the exhibit, I became aware that there were several paintings with like images, which at the time I thought was a bit strange.  As my understanding and learning has developed over the years and as I have watched Dix paint, I have come to realize that often an artist will have an image that they are continually drawn to and have to revisit in different sizes and formats.  The Los Pinos Canyon offers just such images and it is one I have watched Dix paint large and small, rectangle and square over the years.  One of the first permanent collections Dix’s work became a part of was The Broadmoor, a five star property in Colorado Springs, Colorado.  His painting “Los Pinos River” was purchased by the property and hung in the Charles Court Restaurant. Recently, Dix decided to revisit the Los Pinos area again in yet another size and format.  This new painting, “Colorado Winter” will be delivered to the Hayden Hays Gallery, located at The Broadmoor, tomorrow. -Kathlyn Gogarty-Baines

NEWS FROM DIX BAINES STUDIO – ANNOUNCING A NEW PRINT RELEASE

Twenty-two years ago, Dix Baines’ Mother-in-law, ask him to do a quick sketch of Lehi’s Dream, from the Book of Mormon, for use in  her Gospel Doctrine class.  Forty hours later, with Handel’s Messiah for inspiration,  the quick sketch became a painting. As Dix painted, he referred back numerous times to the scripture story and the references made to  the Star over Bethlehem, the three crosses on Golgotha, the iron rod, the spacious building, and the tree of life; all of which he included in his rendition of Lehi’s Dream

We would like to announce the release of this image, “Lehi’s Dream” by Dix Baines, as a signed/numbered limited edition giclee . The print will be on archival german watercolor paper, framed, and under glass. The edition will be limited to 100. To celebrate the release of this giclee, we are offering a $100 discount on all orders that are placed by November 6th.

The role of an artist is to capture images of the day and bring them to the attention of  members of society to appreciate and to leave a legacy for those who will follow.  The artist captures the ordinary and shows us that it is extraordinary, whether it be a landscape, a building, or people on a street.  They leave a visual history of our day so those that come later can connect with us.

Ground was broken for the  LDS St. George Temple in November 1871 and the building was completed and dedicated in 1877.  It is a monument to the pioneers who left the comforts of their homes in the East and spread and colonized the west, and as they did so erected monuments to their faith.  Kathlyn Gogarty-Baines – Dix Baines Studio.

Although, I have been painting trout for a number of years and feel comfortable in doing so, I’m finding that Koi are indeed a whole other animal.  Photographing them is very different, as I don’t catch them, pull them in and then photograph. Instead I have to lay by the side of the pond and capture them either with my regular camara or the video. These mini 5×7 paintings are really a great way to learn to paint these beautiful animals.  DIX BAINES-ARTIST JOURNAL

OFF THE EASEL

The life of an artist always takes us down unexpected paths.  A few weeks ago, Dix was approached about doing a painting of the Castle Rock, a predominant geological feature in Castle Rock, CO.  The company who approached us wanted to use the image for dignitary gifts at a ground breaking for a Centura Health facility being built in Castle Rock.  The result was this incrediable painting of the first light on the Castle Rock, which is now available through the studio, and a run of an edition of a 100 framed mini 5×7 giclees. Of the painting, Dix wrote:

“FIRST LIGHT ON CASTLE ROCK”

For years I had coached down in Castle Rock, and got to see the many moods of the landmark of the town. I had thought of painting the morning light often and capturing the light emblazened rock face. I was recently asked to paint  the Castle Rock for a commerative gift print (closed series of 100). It was a challenge to pick a view, as the geological feature has extremely different profiles depending on your vantage point around the town. This view is the most familiar and sentimental to me; a view I often wanted to stop and paint.
